Keith Tew has facilitated over RM 4 million in claims for clients in Penang, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam and across Malaysia.
The real value of insurance isn't understood until a claim is made. As an AIA advisor who has facilitated over RM 4 million in claims for clients in Penang, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, and Seberang Jaya, I've witnessed firsthand how proper insurance coverage transforms tragedy into resilience.
These are real stories — from real clients who have given their permission to share (names and identifying details changed to protect privacy). These stories demonstrate why having the right medical card Malaysia and life protection is so critically important.
When Wai Ling discovered a lump in her breast during a routine self-examination, she was devastated. At 38, with two young children in primary school in Butterworth, the thought of cancer treatment costs was paralyzing.
Her AIA medical card covered: surgery (mastectomy) — RM 28,000. Chemotherapy (6 cycles) — RM 74,000. Radiation therapy — RM 22,000. Reconstruction surgery — RM 32,000. Total: RM 156,000. Zero out of pocket.
Her critical illness plan paid an additional RM 200,000 lump sum on diagnosis — covering her income loss for 2 years while she recovered. "Keith set up my coverage 3 years before my diagnosis. When the time came, it was like a miracle. I could focus entirely on fighting the cancer, not fighting the bills."
Ramesh collapsed at his factory in Bukit Mertajam on a Tuesday afternoon. Triple bypass surgery followed that same night at a private hospital in Penang. The surgical team worked for 7 hours.
His AIA medical card covered the entire RM 89,000 hospitalisation — 12 days including 4 days in ICU. His critical illness plan paid RM 150,000 for the heart attack diagnosis, covering his 6-month recovery and mortgage payments while he could not work.
"I thought I was invincible at 45. Keith had been telling me for years to review my coverage. I'm so grateful I finally listened 2 years before my heart attack. My family's life was not destroyed because we were protected."
Suraya delivered prematurely at 29 weeks after pre-eclampsia. Her baby son — weighing just 1.1 kg — was placed in the NICU at a private hospital in Penang immediately after birth. 42 days in NICU. Six weeks of fear, prayers, and hope.
Suraya's maternity rider covered her emergency C-section: RM 15,000. The newborn NICU charges were covered by the baby's policy (applied within 14 days of birth): RM 52,000. Total family claims: RM 67,000. Zero out of pocket.
"Keith had told us at our wedding — 'First thing you do after the honeymoon: buy your pregnancy coverage.' We listened. Our son is now 4 years old and perfectly healthy. Those 6 weeks in NICU could have bankrupted us."
Ahmad Faris was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure following 15 years of uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes. He requires haemodialysis three times per week at a private dialysis centre in Penang — each session costs RM 220 to RM 320.
Without insurance: 156 dialysis sessions per year × RM 250 average = RM 39,000 per year. Over 10 years: RM 390,000. His AIA medical card, set up 8 years before his diagnosis, covers every session as outpatient dialysis treatment.
"I didn't think I needed such comprehensive coverage at the time. Keith insisted. Now I don't have to choose between my health and my family's financial survival."
When my clients face a health crisis, here is exactly what I do:
"The most important thing I do is be there for my clients — not just when everything is fine, but when everything falls apart. That's what a real advisor does." — Keith Tew, Penang
For cashless hospitalisation at AIA panel hospitals, approval is usually immediate at admission. For reimbursement claims (non-panel hospitals), settlement typically takes 14–21 working days after submission of complete documents. Critical illness claims typically take 4–6 weeks for full assessment.
Claim rejections are rare when coverage is set up correctly. If a claim is rejected, I review the rejection reason with my clients and file an appeal with supporting medical documentation. In most cases, appeals are successful when the medical evidence is presented properly.
No — that's what I'm here for. As your advisor in Penang, I handle all claim communications with AIA on your behalf. You focus on recovery. I handle the paperwork.
